Alternative Social Media Platforms: Ultimate Guide + 1 Key

Email & Phones work anywhere, regardless of network or device.

Why not your social network?

Now they can, thanks to “ActivityPub” and “The Fediverse”.

Fediverse, BTW, just means “Federated” – like Federation, like Starfleet command, where there’s some common rules, but each planet has some of it’s own thing going on. It’s like that.

SwiftCloud 3.0 Home Events feed is designed to give you the information you want, regardless of source.

That’s a tall order, we know, because all these systems – like big social networks – want to “own you”, to own your attention.

There are also legacy systems like RSS, which allowed you to subscribe to a blog feed, similar to podcasts or a youtube channel.

It’ll take some time, but during 2024 we’ll be rolling out a business-focused feed of things you need to know about, such as

  1. What’s happened inside your account – Docs Signed, Tasks Completed, Appointments Scheduled or Due, Sales Made…
  2. Messages – from other users in your company, incoming voicemails, SMSs, emails
  3. Incoming “Radar Signals” – like competitor product announcements, or ad campaigns
  4. Incoming Reporting about stuff you care about – such as Website Visit reports, or marketing campaigns

Our goal is build you a personal newspaper.

Alternative Social Media Platforms

Activity Pub & Fediverse: Explain it like I’m 5:

Imagine ActivityPub and the Fediverse as a giant, magical playground where kids from different schools can play together.

  1. ActivityPub: Think of ActivityPub as a special language that all the kids in this playground use to talk to each other. Just like how you might learn Spanish or French to speak with more friends, computers use ActivityPub to understand each other. This language helps them share messages, pictures, and games.
  2. The Fediverse: Now, the playground itself is called the Fediverse. It’s made up of many different play areas (websites or apps), like a slide area, a swing area, and a sandbox. Each play area is managed by different people (like different schools managing their own areas in the playground), but because everyone uses the same language (ActivityPub), kids from any school can come to any play area and still have fun together. They can play on the swings, then go build a sandcastle, and everyone understands each other.

So, just like how you can make friends from different schools in a big playground, people on the internet can connect and share things across different websites or apps in the Fediverse, thanks to ActivityPub!
